At 3580 meters, the spectacular Kedarnath temple is situated against the backdrop of the magnificent Kedarnath Mandir Range. It is here that worshippers gather to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. Adi Shankaracharya is credited with building Kedarnath Mandir in the eighth century A.D. The neighboring Mandakini River adds much-needed charm to its allure. Its status as one of the significant temples of the revered Chota Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand adds even more grandeur to the area.
Legend has it that the Pandavas, having defeated the Kauravas in the Kurukshetra battle, felt terrible for killing their family members and turned to Lord Shiva for forgiveness. He escaped from them several times and sought asylum at Kedarnath as a bafellow during his escape. Additionally, it's claimed that in Bharat Khand Badrikashrama, Nar and Narayana—the two renowned incarnations of Lord Vishnu—performed in front of an earthly Shiv lingam. Appearing before them, Lord Shiva was pleased. He asked them to offer a wish. They then begged the Lord to reside in Kedarnath as a Jyotirlingam permanently. Granting their request, the Lord took up residence in the Kedarnath temple. Kedar Dome Peak stands just behind Kedar Mandir at a height of 6490 metres. The spectacular of this giant can be cherished from a distance, and the gleaming view of the temple with a glistening white snow blanket in the background adds charm to its serenity.
The old temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is made of massive but uniformly shaped grey stone slabs and features superb architecture. Within the temple, a conical rock formation is revered as Lord Shiva in his "Sadashiva" avatar. One of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva in India, the Kedarnath temple is devoted to him and is a component of the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit.

Numerous Hindu mythological figures, including Lord Krishna, the Pandavas, Draupadi, Nandi, Shiva's vehicle, and one of Shiva's guardians, Virbhadra, adorn the hall at the entry of Kedarnath Temple. Just outside the temple entrance stands the imposing figure of Nandi. Inside the temple of Kedarnath is a conical rock sculpture revered as the Sadashiva form of Shiva. Within the temple are a "Garba Griha" for worship and a Mandap for travelers..
