Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by Road via Kodari Nyalam Route

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by road from Kodari and Nyalam route was the best known route since before the massive earthquake that took place in Nepal in 2013. For years this route was permanently closed by the Chinese Govt when tourists and pilgrims were visiting Kailash Mansarovar from Kerung (Gyirong) port. In 2025 during August flood which washed away the Nepal-Chine friendship bridge near Kerung/Gyirong, the Chinese Govt considered to allow travellers to enter/exit from Kodari-Nyalam port again after several years. Considered to be a beautiful and a tiny town in Tibet, the Nyalam County is tucked nearby Kodari border and is located at a distance of approximately 35 km from the Tibet's border town of Zhangmu. Zhangmu is known to be the epicentre for entering into Nepal by road from Tibet side. Zhangmu is situatd at a highet of 2,300 metres above the sea level. During old times, Nyalam was commonly renowned as Tsongdu and comprised of the houses which were made out of tin and stones. However, in the contemporary world, this county is developing at an immensely rapid pace and is witnessing the establishment of concrete buildings which are situated on the sides of very famous ‘Friendship Highway’. This popular overland Kailash Mansarovar yatra by bus from Kodari lasts for 14 days and gives an opportunity to discover culture, nature and lifestyle of Tibet while visiting the holy Mount Kailash.

Trip Schedule

13 nights / 14 days from Kathmandu to Kahtmandu by road ex Kodari border

Day 01 : Arrival in Kathmandu

Arrive at Kathmandu’s International Airport and from there you will greeted and picked up by Max Holidays representative who will arrange a comfortable transfer for you to your pre-booked accommodation in Kathmandu. Check-in to the hotel for dinner and night stay.

Day 02 : Kathmandu Sightseeing

In the morning the guide will take you to world famous Pashupatinath Temple for Darshan and puja. Situated on the bank of Bagmati River in Kathmandu, Pashupatinath Temple is known as one of the oldest and is among one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. Later visit Budhanilkantha Jal Narayan temple where you worship the large statue of sleeping Vishnu. Also visit Guhyeshwari Mata mandir Shaktipeeth before you head to your hotel. In the afternoon the group members may decide to visit the local markets nearby or spend leisurely time in their hotel. In the evening a trip briefing session will be organised by our local team where where the group will discuss about the further itinerary and the team will distribute them bags, jackets etc for the trip. Meals and night stay today on your Kaiash Mansarovar Yatra via Kodari will be in the hotel at Kathmandu.

Day 03 : Drive Kathmandu to Kodari border

After breakfast bring your luggage down in the lobby of the hotel for the trip. Keep your extra luggage in the hotel and you may collect the same upon your return after the trip. After breakfast board the bus and continue drive towards Kodari border. The 135 kms drive from Kathmandu to Kodari is through rough unpaved roads mainly. The drive may take about 5-6 hours and can be tiring due to the traffic and road conditions. Near the border one may also visit Tatopani hot water spring. On reaching Kodari take your meal in a local dhaba restaurant and rest in the guesthouse. Meals and night stay will be near Kodari today.

Day 04 : Kodari to Nyalam

This day drive towards the border of Nepal & China from where you will be starting your journey to Nyalam. On reaching the border, firstly complete all the custom and immigration formalities and once done, you will have to cross the Friendship Bridge by a 15- minutes’ walk. On arriving at the China side you will be meeting the Chinese guide and from there he will be further assisting your transfer to Nyalam. Check-in at your pre-booked guesthouse/lodge there and then stay overnight there.

Day 04 : Nyalam - Free Day For Acclimatization

Today you will spending the whole day at Nyalam where you will be acclimatizing yourself in the Nyalam’s weather by staying at your hotel/guesthouse or doing the short treks.

Day 05 : Nyalam to Saga

Have some tasty breakfast and then start your drive towards Saga or New Dongba while crossing the highly beautiful Brahmaputra River (Yarlung Tsangpo). Stay overnight at a guesthouse/hotel in Saga or New Dongba.

Day 06 : Saga to Lake Mansarovar

Today morning, start your day with a luscious breakfast and then drive for 7-8 hours towards Manasarovar. Apart from this, you are also going to have the first view of Mount Kailash. Reach Manasarovar and stay overnight at a dormitory styled lodge near Lake Manasarovar.

Day 07 : Mansarovar Lake to Darchen

Wake up early morning and take a holy bath at the holy Lake Manasarovar and also, we shall arrange a puja on the banks of Lake Manasarovar (direct payment basis). Once done, have some breakfast and then start your drive towards Darchen. On reaching there, stay overnight at your lodge/guesthouse in Darchen.

Day 08 : Darchen to Dirapukh, 1st Day Trekking

Once done with some tasty breakfast, drive towards Yam Dwar and then start your trek towards Dirapuk. Reach there and stay overnight at your lodge/guesthouse at Dirapuk.

Day 09 : Dirapukh to Zuthulpukh, 2nd Day Trekking

Wake up early morning and then see the Golden view of Mount Kailash. After that, have some breakfast and then continue with your Kora/circumambulation towards reaching Zuthulphuk. Arrive there and then stay overnight at your dormitory styled lodge/guesthouse at Zuthulphuk.

Day 10 : Zuthulpukh to Darchen, Drive to Saga

Start your day with the last trek towards Darchen. Reach Darchen, have some lunch and from there continue your drive towards Saga. Stay in a pre-booked hotel/lodge/guesthouse at Saga.

Day 12 : Nyalam to Kathmandu via Kodari Border

After breakfast, start your drive from Nyalam in order to reach the Friendship Bridge. On reaching there, complete some custom and immigration formalities, and then further continue your drive towards Kathmandu. Arrive at Kathmandu and then stay overnight at a pre-booked accommodation there.

Day 13 : Leave Kathmandu
